Our official language

POSTED: August 28, 2008

EDITOR:Ever wonder why, with all the taxes we pay for public education, the test scores for America's school children continue to fall year after year?

One big reason is that thanks to our multi-cultural policies. Our schools are required under a federal mandate to teach school children in the language spoken by their ancestors.

This, of course, requires special teachers, textbooks and classrooms. The cost is phenomenal and leaves no money left for the basic tools of education like books, classrooms, etc.

Yes, I know this sounds outrageous, even unbelievable, but it is the law of the land and it is being implemented from coast to coast, including our community. And unless you and I do something to stop it, our country will squander billions of dollars on this destructive, divisive and totally unnecessary program.

Fortunately, there are members of Congress who are outraged by these policies and who are working day and night to put a stop to this multi-cultural experiment before it is too late.

Congressman Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., is one of those people who understand the problem very well. As chairman of the House Immigration Reform Caucus for many years, he has fought against bilingual programs that made it unnecessary and even unprofitable for immigrants to learn our language and assimilate into our society.

Over the last few years, he has become a nationally recognized figure for his efforts on these issues.

One of the first bills Congressman Tancredo introduced this year was H.J. Res. 19: "Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to establish English as the official language of the United States."

The goal of making English our official language is an effort to restore the great American melting pot that took in immigrants from all over the world, taught them our language and our culture and made them proud to be Americans.

An English Language Amendment would be a permanent solution to America's language crisis. If passed and signed into law, the Tancredo English Language Amendment would preserve forever America's language, culture and heritage.

This would mean no more bilingual ballots, no more bilingual education, no more motor state vehicle bureaus that look and sound like United Nation outposts or Mexican Consulates.

Did you know that the federally mandated bilingual programs are spreading across the nation like cancer, making everything from businesses to health care more expensive and less efficient?

Most hospitals now are under a federal mandate to provide service to their patients in the language of their choice.

This means that a person can walk into a hospital and expect to be spoken to in whatever language he chooses. Failure to provide such services could cause a hospital to lose it accreditation, face a lawsuit and lose any form of federal support it may receive.

Can you imagine what it has to cost hospitals to provide such a service?

No wonder our health care costs keeps skyrocketing. And guess who is asking for these services?

For the most part this entire policy seems to have been created to serve the needs of illegal aliens who receive their health care services for free under federal mandate.

Health care is just one of the institutions being burdened by our insane language laws. I invite you to learn more about all of them by visiting the following website, www.english.org.

I see you're bringing up Tom Tancredo. His castrophic loss in the Republican primaries shows how much of the USA thinks the same way he does.

This is pretty funny. If language is killing the schools then explain why the Northern wisconsin schools,Florence for example, and the upper peninsula schools are giving our children sub standard educations? Not for any reason you have stated. Maybe it is the parents faults? Maybe it is because we refuse to fully fund our local schools with our tax dollars? Maybe our teachers arent very good at teaching students? So many reasons to say our schools are substandard on the world stage falling into the rank 20's worldwide. I still think one of the real reasons is that people have taken pride in their ignorance, parents and students alike. " Git r Done! and you might be a ******* stuff.

...slam the xenophobics.... ha, isn't that, errr you? And yes, on a "global" scale, cultural and language barriers have a tremendous impact on the institutions. However, none of them greater than that of not having parental involvement... that's right. Stop waiting for the teachers to do everything. Study with your kids! As for locally, I would seriously doubt that the aforementioned issue is truly applicable. Unless you want to count "ignorance" as a foreighn language. "he that is good for making excuses, is seldom good for anything else..." Franklin.

WHO cares about the "Official Language?" Well... the writer of this letter to the editor. Why are we so worried about languages? In foreign Countries They speak MANY languages.... It seems as if we are quite arrogant to assume that everyone in our Melting Pot of a Free Country needs to be worried about this.

Educational failures are not the same issue as the "official language." Who cares what language people speak?

The reason kids don't get a good education in some public schools can be explained in one word - TENURE.

Many immigrants, including the ones in our area, spoke their native languages in their homes. They also lived next to one another because they shared a culture and a language. Hence the reason the north side is Italian, we have Swedetown’s, etc. English was eventually is incorporated into these communities, just as it will be today. “This would mean no more bilingual ballots … Mexican Consulates. The Mexican Consulate must have been a slip up. Up until this point, your article did not single out a specific group. Is your problem with Mexican-Americans? If you think that multi-lingual language requirements are bankrupting the country, you have fallen for a typical conservative bait and switch trick. The country is going bankrupt precisely because conservatives constantly push these ideas instead of tackling “real” problems like: Health Care, Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, Balancing the Federal Budget, Paying the National Debt, etc. These are the issues that will bankrupt

“Ever wonder why, … children continue to fall year after year?” The reason test scores for children continues to fall is because teachers are mandated to teach them how to pass a specific test like No Child Left Behind, instead of teaching them how to think and solve problems. “This, of course, requires special teachers, … The cost is phenomenal and leaves no money left …” Yet, even with all this so-called waste, we can find billions of dollars for war profiteers like Halliburton and KBR. “The goal of making English our official language is an effort to restore the great American melting pot that took in immigrants from all over the world, taught them our language and our culture and made them proud to be Americans.” Many immigrants, including the ones in our area, spoke their native languages in their homes. du bist verrueckt!!!!! lerne eine andere sprache und werde mitglied der welt!

Everyone should be able to speak and write another language. Welcome to the 21st Century and Hospitals and educational institutions should adapt because they have to.

Healthcare needs it because they need to understand a patient. Education needs it because, simply, its educational to know more then one language Generally you make more money and your more valuable to your company if you know another language.

Let's pretend you were in Germany of France.... or MANY other countries...... On Vacation.... and you have an accident or a heart attack..... It is likely that the medical staff might be able to communicate with YOU..... maybe Save your Life. I have traveled to other countries.... It is remarkable how many people in other countries are actually Multi-ligual! I have not heard so many of them complain about languages..... I find that they are truly gifted. And many of these countries have excellent educational systems..... and these students are better off than most American Students Academically. English is very important to learn... I agree..... However I do not think it needs to be an Official Language. After all America has been a melting pot of many cultures.... And Maybe the "Native American" might consider that we should have Native American the "Official Language" .... after all.... THEY were here FIRST! OH but think about it... EVEN the Native Americ
