NEGAUNEE - A Sagola man drowned while duck hunting in Ishpeming Township on Saturday morning, officials from the Negaunee Post of the Michigan State Police reported.

Cody Lee Shirkey, 22, and Ishpeming resident Dale Alongo, 24, were duck hunting from a small boat on Pike's Pond near North Lake Location when their boat became unstable and took on water at approximately 9 a.m., troopers said.

Troopers said that neither man was wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident, but Alongo was able to swim to the shore.

Shirkey's body was recovered by divers from the Marquette County Search and Rescue team at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Additional units responding to the scene included the Marquette County Sheriff's Department and Bell EMS.
