Elks offer scholarships
IRON MOUNTAIN - Iron Mountain Elks Lodge 700 is once again promoting the Elks National Foundation Scholarship for the Most Valuable Student (MVS) along with the Legacy and Emergency Grant Funds and the Gold Key Scholarship.
The MVS is open to all students who are seniors this year. The award is based on financial need, leadership, and scholarship. These range from $1,000 to $15,000 a year for four years. Deadline to get these in is Jan. 9, 2009.
The Legacy is open strictly to children, stepchildren and grandchildren or step grandchildren of paid up current members of the Elks. These are $1,000 a year for four years in a full time position. Deadline to get these in is Jan. 9, 2009.
Emergency grants are available for students whose parent has died or become totally disabled and were paid up current members for a minimum of one year prior to death or disability.
New applicants must file their applications between July 1 and December 31, renewals must re-apply between July and Oct.31 while enrolled.
The main criteria is that they must meet a financial need. Applications require that the circumstances surrounding the death or total disability are subject to review by the Elks National Foundation.
The outcome can affect the application. Applications must be turned in to the Lodge in which the parent or grandparent was a member to be investigated and voted on. To allow ample time for this they should be in one week before the final date.
Iron Mountain Elks Lodge 700 also has the Gold Key Scholarship which is available to mentally or physically challenged students who would otherwise not be able to attend college. The main criteria for this is you must have teacher and physician verification that you are a special needs young adult and be a senior in high school. This is a $2,000 scholarship that is renewable to a maximum of four years total. The application must be submitted to the Elks Lodge that is in your living jurisdiction.
