Flivver swimmers
sweep Westwood
ISHPEMING - Kingsford swimmers claimed a pair of team wins over Westwood here Tuesday. The girls team won 114-58, while the boys prevailed 140-31, with four races uncontested due to lack of numbers on the Westwood boys squad.
Event winners for the girls were Dayna DeRidder in the 200 freestyle, Stephanie Nelson in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke, Claryce Porzondek in the 50 and100 freestyle, Zoe Kanters in the 100 breaststroke and Kelsey Westcott in the 500 freestyle. In three of those events, Flivver girls finished 1-2-3.
In relay action, Kristi Ross, Kanters, Porzondek and Emma Pontti were first in the 200 medley. Ross, Pontti,Porozondek and Kalina Sturm took the 200 freestyle and Tierney Walsh, Sturm, DeRidder and Nelson won the 400 freestyle.
"We had some girls back in the lineup that we did not have last week and it really made a difference," Flivvers head coach Jim Lindstrom said. "There are still some things we need to clean up but over all it was not a bad performance for this early in the year."
Boys winners were Steve Mulka in the 200 and 500 freestyle, Andy Lindstrom in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, Andrew Mitchell in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly and Taylor Sturm in the 50 and 100 freestyle.
The 200 medley relay of Alec Thurston, Lindstrom, Mitchell and Mulka, the 200 freestyle relay of Mitchell, Lindstrom, Thurston and Sturm and the 400 freestyle relay David DaAmour, Kyle Vuorinen, Sturm, and Mulka also all finished fastest.
"Most of the boys were at or very near their best times which is nice to see for this time of year," Lindstrom said. "We had some solid performances from some of the younger swimmers and some of the new ones. It seems they are all doing well this year working hard and rapidly improving."
