IRON MOUNTAIN - Tom Wender, who guided Iron Mountain High School to a pair of state championships, has been named to the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
The induction ceremony will honor 14 of the state's outstanding high school football coaches on Saturday, March 28, at the University of Michigan track & field building. Social starts at 5 p.m. (Central time).
Wender, now a Northern Michigan University assistant, led the Mountaineers to the 1993 (Class C) and 2000 (Division 7) state titles. They also finished as a state runner-up in 14 postseason appearances.
The Mountaineers, who posted a 166-52 record in 21 seasons with Wender, captured eight Mid-Peninsula Conference titles.
Wender will enter the Hall of Fame with Jack Coon, Cheboygan; Rodney Baker, Dearborn Fordson; Russ Barnes, Decatur; Alan Boydston, Caro; Bob Buckel, Flushing; John Butler, Grand Rapids South Christian; Jerome Goosen, Ovid-Elsie; Richard Harris, Harrison; David Janusiewicz, Muskegon Orchard View; Robert Kalbfleisch, Warren Cousino; Robert Kelly, Allen Park; Al Romano, Adrian, and Terry Wilczek, Midland.
University of Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez will be the banquet's featured speaker.
