CHANNING - Monday, May 11, 2009, marked the opener for the newly-constructed Newberg Baseball Field.
The field construction started July 2008, and was completed this spring. Currently it is being used by Sagola Township-Aspen Lumber Senior Little League and Channing American Legion baseball teams.
Sagola Township has fielded a local team playing for the past few years under the sponsorship of Aspen Lumber of Sagola.
The township was not able to provide its team a field to play home games or conduct practice. However, it was able to team up with Felch Township and utilize its facility.
"As Sagola Township members, we are very grateful for the opportunity to play at Felch's field," said a representative of the Newberg Field Project Committee. "However, with the increasing number of players in the community, it was viewed as our opportunity to bring baseball back to the Channing area."
Last July, a few individuals from Sagola Township approached the township board requesting permission to construct a new field. A donation had already been secured from Penny Newberg for the purchase price and installation of the fence.
"The township generously provided a monetary donation to be used for additional construction needs," representative said. "The decision to allow a few members of the township to go forward and construct a new field to be used by our youth as a hardball field was approved.
"Much hard work and many long days of dedication and physical labor went into the construction."
Individuals responsible for constructing Newberg Field ask that anyone wishing to use the fields not alter baselines, damage any outer buildings, clean up after themselves and to take pride in the renovated fields.
"Those involved in the construction of the Newberg Field and newly renovated Brownie Olson Field would love to see the fields be used in the future," representative said. "We would like the community to feel welcome, and just because the baselines are raked frequently, your footprints our welcome."
Newberg Field Project Committee expressed appreciation to the following for their donations:
Mrs. Penny Newberg, Sagola Township Board, Carey Logging, Gundlach Champion, Inc., Champion Concrete, Inc., Holsworth Brothers of (Keystone Masonry), Brian VanOss of (B&B Electric), Minerick Logging, Wendricks Truss, Louisiana Pacific, RC Rebuilders, Boussum Well Drilling, Channing Restaurant, Cuculi's Bar and Williams Contracting.
Committee also recognized community members for "countless hours of service."
"We would also like to thank members of Sagola Township who graciously supported our Little League teams in their recent returnable fund-raiser," representative said.
Those wishing to make a donation for future maintenance expenses and improvements to the baseball fields, send to Sagola Little League, N10894 Hwy M-95, Channing, MI 49815.
