NEGAUNEE - Iron Mountain - a sleeper team with no dominant event - beat out Calumet and Kingsford to take the Division 1 boys regional track & field crown here Thursday.

Iron Mountain finished with 45 points, followed by Calumet (35), Kingsford (35), Negaunee (34), Houghton (29) and Gwinn (9).

"Coming in here, I never really thought we had a chance to win it, so it's awesome to get those kids in," Iron Mountain coach Dale Powell said, "and get a chance to participate in the best event in the U.P., the Upper Peninsula Track Finals."

Iron Mountain won, not with the most dominant single athlete, but with production from the whole team, riding second and third-place finishes to the title.

"That's kind of been our M.O. all year," Powell said. "A little bit of depth more so than having that one big stud that's going to get you all the points."

Iron Mountain's Jeff Anderson took the discus while teammate Tony Secinaro tied Kingsford's Dylan Tengesdahl for first place in the 200. Tengesdahl copped the 100 outright as did the Flivvers' Erik Kleisner in the 400.

If there was one dominant performance at Thursday's regional meet it was Negaunee's Dillon Menard, who set meet records in the 300 meter hurdles and the long jump.
