IRON MOUNTAIN - Chuck Lantz has been named the new director of the Office of Veterans Affairs in Iron Mountain that serves Dickinson County veterans.

Lantz is a 10-year U.S. Air Force veteran and also a veteran of Desert Storm. He is a past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3674 in Iron Mountain and a member of the American Legion Post 50, Sons of the American Legion Squadron Post 50 and Elks Lodge 700.

Lantz also serves on the Pine Mountain War Memorial Committee and is a volunteer on the American Red Cross Disaster Team.

"Chuck has done countless volunteer hours with several organizations in the community. He will be a great asset to the Dickinson County Office of Veterans Affairs," noted members of the executive board.

The Dickinson County Office of Veterans Affairs is the oldest county veterans office in the state of Michigan. During World War II, there was a need in Dickinson County for services to assist the soldiers going to and coming home from war.

The veterans organizations formed a council and applied for financial assistance from the county to open and operate an office.

Services provided by the Office of Veterans Affairs include burial benefits as well as markers; pension applications; eligible verification reports for a non-service connected disability; educational benefits; Michigan Veterans Trust Fund Assistance; counseling; Homestead Property Tax Credit and Home Heating Tax Credit in Michigan; Dependency Indemnity Compensation; and other types of assistance for veterans and their families.

The office is also involved in coordinating most of the grave flags within the county, the Memorial Day program, organizing the Veterans Day program and dinner and coordinating the Share Your Christmas program for more than 60 years.

"We exist to serve the veterans and their families. That was the goal more than 60 years ago and remains our goal today," Lantz said.

The Office of Veterans Affairs is located at 800 Crystal Lake Blvd. in iron Mountain and can be reached by calling 774-2820 or e-mailing dcova@charternet.com.

In addition to Lantz as the director of the office, the receptionists are Carol Conway and Gina Hoaglund.

Executive board members for the Office of Veterans Affairs include Marvin Fetterly, John Mella, Bernie Raymond and Phillip Solom.
