Officer hurt in crash

By LISA M. HOFFMANN, Staff Writer
POSTED: August 6, 2009

IRON MOUNTAIN - A lieutenant of the Dickinson County Sheriff's Department is hospitalized following a motorcycle accident during a Patriot Guard ride on Tuesday night.

Norway Police Department officers said that at 9:16 p.m. Tuesday, a motorcycle driven by Derek Dixon of Kingsford was traveling east on U.S. 2 and O'Dill Road near the Jake Menghini Historical Museum with a group of other motorcyclists, and struck an exhaust pipe that apparently fell from another motorcycle.

Police said this caused Dixon, 35, to lose control and crash.

Dickinson County Sheriff Scott A. Celello said that Dixon, a road lieutenant with the sheriff's department, was taking part in an escort from Ford Airport in Kingsford to the home of retired Sheriff Donald Charlevoix in Norway Township when the accident occurred.

Celello said Holly Charlevoix, daughter of Don Charlevoix, had returned home from Afghanistan on leave. The Patriot Guard motorcycle organization was escorting her home, as they do for all returning soldiers.

Lt. Dixon was off-duty at the time of the accident, Celello said. As the escort was traveling east on U.S. 2 near the viaduct, a motorcycle traveling ahead of Lt. Dixon's motorcycle lost a muffler and struck the front of his bike.

Dixon, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was transported to Dickinson County Memorial Hospital by North Alert Ambulance for treatment of injuries he received.

Dixon is reported to be in fair condition today at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital. He has been with the sheriff's department for 12 years, having become road lieutenant on Jan. 1 of this year.

Sheriff Celello thanks all who took part in the escort and those who assisted at the scene of the accident, including Kingsford Public Safety, Iron Mountain Police Department, Veterans Affairs Police, Norway Police Department, North Alert ambulance and Beacon ambulance services.

The Patriot Guard organized the escort.

Norway Police Department is investigating the accident.

amadzed - I have to agree with you, again in our community it is not 'what you know, but who is implicated in what you know'

All you have to do is call Shiney Side up or the VFW and an escort will be arranged.

I agree with some of you but others are just passing gossip judgment and always keep the facts real and if you dont know them then I suggest you get them first before stating things that are not true.

There should be an escort for all the service men/woman when they return home from serving our country as it should not be a select few as we are proud of ALL of them and we should show it for ALL. I am not sure who sets up the escorts but in our community we have men/woman coming home on a regular basis from serving our country and this would be a great example of showing support.

I also have to question why The Daily News did not print the return of this service person but can print garbage on a daily basis, just shows priorities and they can not say they did not know as they know EVERYTHING.

iluv: All you would have to have done is contact the patriot guard. The same would have been done for your son if it was asked and they knew that he was coming home.

iluv, maybe you should have called the daily news to let them know that your son was coming home.

Where were they when my son came home?

And the retired Sheriff's child that came home was his daughter. Kingsford escorted in their jurisdiction, and the Road Lt that was injured was there on his own time, on his own motorcycle.

i didn't know that this girl was coming home. i wish the daily news would put this in the paper the day before so citizens can come out and greet these fine people. the only way i knew something was going on was when i heard all the bikes come into the parking lot.

when they left the airport, kingsford was also escorting so they must have been there to help.

My respect to all of these officers for recognising these young men that put their lives on the line for all Americans. My respect to the service men and women as well. Peace to you all.

alifeoflovetaken: I just wanted to point out again how dumb you sounded with your last statment. UPSANDRA had it correct, the officers were already in the area! You may also want to know that some of these police officers came in on their off time to do this escort and were not getting paid. When the accident happened they did what they normally do, they stopped and rendered aid.

Just so you have the facts, some of the other police cars were already in the area.

Unreal..So Norway cops couldnt do this there self.I think so.Why did all these other cops show up out of there coverage area.It wasnt a crime scean? Lets see who shows up when Joe ,Dan or Steve get injured.......Oh wait...they arent cops.

I love the fact that the Patriot Riders keep bringing these troops home, such a warm welcome I might say.. Thanks to all the riders that make this happen. I hope Dixon is OK and will be ready for the next soldier....
