Orthodox bishop visits Iron Mountain

POSTED: November 5, 2009

IRON MOUNTAIN - His Grace Bishop Mark (Maymon) of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church of America recently visited Iron Mountain and the parish family of St. Mary's Church.

Bishop Mark was here for his annual visit, and to also encourage and bless the work that the church leaders were doing.

"This church and its leaders have done a fabulous job working with community leaders and volunteers," Bishop Mark said.

Bishop Mark presided at a Hierarchal Divine Liturgy (the main worship service of the Orthodox Church) where he presented two members of the parish council, Louis Cini and Richard Abraham, with awards for meritorious and dedicated service in Christ.

During the visit, Fr. Mark Hagan was also honored and elevated to the Archpriesthood. This is the highest ranking status of married Orthodox clergy under the bishop.

"I am very humbled and honored," Hagan said, as he received the customary large cross that an Orthodox Archpriest will wear.

The Orthodox church has its roots and history dating back to the apostles. It has been extremely consistent in faith, doctrine, and worship over the last 2,000 years, Hagan said.

Bishop Mark is expected to return in May to dedicate the soccer complex. More pictures and other information on the Orthodox faith can be found on the church website at www.IMorthodox.org.
