Opening day buck

Ernest Remondini of Caspian tagged a three-point buck on the opening morning of the Michigan firearm season. "At my age (83), I can't be selective," he said. He was using his Winchester .308 Model 100. He was accompanied by his daughter, Christine Huven, who spotted the buck.

Christmas Bird Count to take place Dec. 19

IRON MOUNTAIN - The National Audubon Christmas Bird Count will be held locally on Saturday Dec. 19.

The count area encompasses the M-95/U.S. 2 corridor from Merriman south through Aurora and Niagara, Wis., and east to Waucedah.

Counts will be done on driving routes throughout this area and by observers at feeders.

Any interested person can participate in the count. Information can be obtained by calling Evelyn Olson at (901) 774-3211 or by e-mail at ejbirdlvr@chartermi.net.

Residents who maintain feeders are requested to keep them filled during the count day, Olson said.

Sightings of rare or unusual birds seen during the count period of Dec. 14 through Jan. 1, 2010, can also be reported to Olson for inclusion in the survey.

The local Christmas Bird Count conducted on Dec. 20, 2008, included 41 observers who reported 3,350 individual birds of 45 separate species.
