NORWAY - Good crowds enjoyed the pre-opening of the Centennial Dickinson County Fair on Wednesday.
Kathy Belanger, fair secretary, said Wednesday's pre-fair opening of Skerbeck Carnival went pretty well.
"There were more people here than I had expected," she said. "It went really well. All the rides and food vendors are up and running."
The fair has a new vendor from Garden in Delta County selling whitefish this year.
A ride that may be new this year is Vertigo, which goes straight up and down, Belanger said.
Belanger added quite a few youth market and breeding animal entries were brought in, along with lots of antiques.
"It was a good year for that," she said.
Horses, poultry, rabbits and all other entries will be brought in today.
New this year is a scarecrow contest. Scarecrow entries will be scattered throughout the fair, and fair-goers are encouraged to count them. An official number will be known as soon as all the entries are in.
"There will be scarecrows all over the place," Belanger said.
The official opening of the fair is at 5 p.m. today. Belanger also said those attending should make sure they check out the Art Department, which features photos of past fairs.
Also tonight at 7 is the Eve of Devastation, a racing show modeled after the same concept at Kaukauna's Eve of Disaster. All seats are $10.
It costs $3 to enter the fair or $10 for a weekly pass. Children age 5 and under are free.
Admission and rides will be $1 each on Monday for a Centennial special.
Deputies from the Dickinson County Sheriff's Department will be present at the fair.
