MINOCQUA, Wis. - We said goodbye to a wonderful man on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, Leroy Phillip Buckel of Minocqua. At the age of 89, he died at Avanti Health and Rehab Center in Minocqua, from complications of dementia.
Larry was born on Aug. 31, 1921, in Kalkaska, Mich., to Roy and Crystal (Lane) Buckel. In 1935, his parents moved the family to Fordville, Mich. He attended Old Felch High School with his brother, Bruce and sisters, Eva and Jean before graduating in 1939. During World War II, Larry served his country as a second lieutenant in the Army guarding the Panama Canal.
After the war, Larry studied at Illinois Institute of Technology and graduated in 1951 with a degree in industrial engineering. He began his career as an industrial engineer at the McGraw-Edison-Kyle Plant in South Milwaukee, Wis. He was quickly promoted to plant manager eventually retiring in 1980. Four years later he moved with his wife, Helen, to Minocqua and he enjoyed the last 26 years of his life in the Northwoods.
Larry married Helen Elizabeth Nord on July 3, 1946, at the Forth Presbyterian Church of Chicago. They were blessed with six children, Karen, Barbara, Linda, Susan, John and Sally.
Larry enjoyed working around the house, his daily walks around lake Minocqua, fishing for crappies, caring for his raspberry patch, playing bridge with his friends, watching Packer football, and visits with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. But most of all, he cherished his relationship with his wife, Helen, she was the center of his life.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen; his children, Barbara Buckel, Linda and husband, Paul Owen, Susan and husband, Mike Stanislawski, John Buckel and wife, Susan and Sally and husband, Frank Holloway; his grandchildren, Sam Owen, Lee Owen, Jake Owen, Ben Stanislawski, Kyle Stanislawski, Amanda (Buckel) and husband, David Risse, Elisha Buckel, Daryl Buckel, Jack Holloway, Neil Holloway, and Frank Holloway Jr.; great-grandchildren, Hailey Stanislawski and Ethan Risse; sister, Jean Peronto and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Crystal Buckel; brother, Bruce Buckel; sister, Eva Moore; and daughter, Karen (Buckel) Kuether.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Bolger Funeral Home-Woodruff Chapel.
Visitation will be one hour prior the service at the funeral home on Wednesday.
Burial will be in the Foster City Cemetery in Foster City.
