MARQUETTE- The Department of Natural Resources and Environment has announced that a portion of state snowmobile trail 415 has been closed for the season.
This closure is due to a change in private land use permission on approximately eight miles of trail, between the village of Garden and Johnson Road.
The five miles of trail between Johnson Road and U.S. 2/state snowmobile trail 2 will remain open for riding. No alternate route to Garden has been identified at this time, but an alternate route is being explored for next year.
For more information about the trail closure, contact DNRE Shingleton Management Unit Fire Supervisor Scott Lakosky at 906-452-6227, or DNRE Recreation Specialist Dan Moore at 906-293-5131.
Additionally, a portion of state snowmobile trail 45 in Luce County, also known as "The Falls" trail, will be closed from Dec. 19-24 to allow for trail maintenance.
The temporary closure will affect approximately five miles of trail between County Road 500 and Tahquamenon Falls State Park.
As an alternate route, snowmobilers can take County Road 500 to trail 8 and head toward Paradise, then rejoin trail 45 to access the state park.
"Access to the repair site is dependent on being able to stabilize the trail with snow and freezing temperatures, which means we could not begin the project until this time," said DNRE Newberry Unit Fire Supervisor Paul Gaberdiel. "Completing this project will allow the local snowmobile club to begin grooming this section of trail earlier in the snowmobile season and should improve trail conditions throughout the season."
