Regional spelling bee on Thursday

IRON MOUNTAIN - The regional spelling bee, hosted by the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Community Schools, will be held Thursday in both the Iron Mountain and Kingsford school auditoriums.

Regional participants include the top spellers in grades 5-8 from each of the Iron Mountain, Kingsford, Norway, North Dickinson and Forest Park schools.

The fifth grade bee will begin at 6 p.m. at Iron Mountain High School auditorium, followed by the sixth grade bee at approximately 7 p.m.

The seventh grade bee will begin at 6 p.m. at the Kingsford High School auditorium and the eighth grade bee at 7 p.m.

The top two spellers from each grade will move on from the regional spelling bee to

compete in the U.P. Spelling Bee finals on Wednesday, March 16.

The U.P. finals are hosted by the Ishpeming-Negaunee-NICE Community Schools at both Westwood High School and Negaunee High School. The event is sponsored by the Upper Peninsula Community Education Association.

The U.P. Spelling Bee champion will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee on June 1-2.
