KHS announces top 10 percent of Class of 2011

KINGSFORD - The top 10 percent of the Kingsford High School graduating Class of 2011 have been named, according to an announcement by school officials.

The 15 seniors that make up the top 10 percent include Ana Beaudoin, Luke Bussiere, Hillary Chapman, Tyler Cotton, Catherine Dulan, Emily Lawton, Maegan Mathew, Ryan McGillviray, Mary Milford, Amy Pearce, Jay Pietila, Keri Pietsch, Katie Roell, Celeste Santi, and Alyssa Smith.

Ana Beaudoin is the daughter of Kipp and Tami Beaudoin. Her future plans include attending the University of Detroit Mercy and majoring in accounting.

While at KHS, she has been a member of the National Honor Society for two years; drama for four years including serving as treasurer and props manager for two years; jazz band for four years; pep band for four years; and Academic Booster Club for four years. In athletics, she has been a member of the volleyball team for four years and track team for three years.

Luke Bussiere is the son of Daniel and CeCelia Bussiere. His future plans include attending the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and then Ferris State University to become an optometrist.

Luke has been involved in the pasty and pizza sales at the Aurora Free Church.

At KHS, he has received several honors including being an Academic Letter and Bar winner and on the All A honor roll for four consecutive semesters.

Hillary Chapman is the daughter of George and Carla Anderson. She plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and study meteorology.

At KHS she has been involved in cheerleading as a freshman, KHS Outreach for three years, Mixed Chorus as a freshman, Heart & Soul as a sophomore, and the Concert Chorale for two years including serving as student director and section leader.

Her community activities include being a member of the Community Chorus, and a volunteer at he VA Medical Center.

Tyler Cotton is the son of Terry and Nancy Raiche. He plans to attend Northern Michigan University for pre-medicine and then go on to medical school.

At KHS, Tyler has been involved in football, track, wrestling and weightlifting. He has been honored as the Student of the Week, Math Student of the Month and Student of the Month.

In the community, he has been a volunteer at the VA Medical Center and South Lyon Medical Center.

Catherine Dulan is the daughter of Mark Dulan and Mary Linn Balcer. She plans to attend Mount Mary College to pursue a degree in theology.

While in school, she has been on the tennis team for four years, Student Council for four years, Drama Club as well as serving as co-president, class secretary for two years, and National Honor Society for two years.

Within the community, Catherine has been an altar server, lector and Faith Formations fifth grade catechist for American Martyrs Catholic Church, a member of the Stella Maris Youth Group, and attended Youth Encounter Christ.

Catherine has also been selected for Girls State 2010, Women's Engineering Math and Science Award, All A's Honor Roll for seven consecutive semesters, and Academic Letter and Bar winner

Emily Lawton is the daughter of Eric and Sharon Lawton. She is planning to go to Harvard to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering with a secondary concentration in mathematics or computer science.

While at KHS, Emily has been a member of the cross country and track teams for four years, basketball for two years, National Honor Society for two years including serving as treasurer, class officer for three years, senior class treasurer, Student Council for four years, math tutor for two years, KHS-Outreach for three years, marching/concert/pep bands for four years as well as serving as section leader and squad leader, attended Solo & Ensemble for four years, and a member of the Honors Band for four years.

Within the community, she has been a volunteer at Evergreen Assisted Living and a MOTOR volunteer. Honors for Emily include being an Academic Letter and Bar winner, National Merit Commended Student, Student of the Week, Principal's Leadership Award, Cross Country MVP, All-State Cross Country, Academic All-State Cross Country, Air Force Math and Science Award, and Prudential Spirit of Community honoree.

Maegan Mathew is the daughter of Jennifer and Daniel Anderson. She plans to attend the University of Michigan.

While in school, she has been a member of the National Honor Society for two years as well as president her senior year; tennis team for four years; drama club for four years as well as technical director for two years; Pep Band for two years; and Marching Band squad leader her junior year.

Maegan's activities in the community included being involved with the Kids on the Block puppets and Our Saviour's Lutheran Church youth group. She has also been honored as an Academic Letter and Bar winner and Vocational Center A+ Outstanding Student Award

Ryan McGillviray is the son of Jeff and Joanne McGillviray. He plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to pursue a degree in the natural resources field.

At KHS, he has been involved in wrestling for two years including co-captain his junior year; football for two years; National Honor Society for two years; and a biology tutor his senior year.

Ryan has more than 400 community volunteer hours including work on a veterans project, blood drives, assistant youth wrestling coach, and volunteer for school and sporting events.

He was also honored as an Academic Letter and Bar winner and selected as a prom court member.

Mary Milford is the daughter of Steve Milford. She plans to attend the University of Michigan for architecture or urban planning.

In school, Mary has been a member of the Concert Band for four years as well as section leader; Marching Band for four years serving as drum major; volleyball team for four years; track team for two years; drama club for three years; National Honor Society for two years; and a member of the Academic Booster Club for two years.

Mary has also volunteered at Nottawa Summer School program. She has received several honors including being selected for the St. Norbert College Honors Band, District Honors Band, and an Academic Letter and Bar winner.

Amy Pearce is the daughter of John and Holly Pearce. Her plans after high school are to attend the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and study architecture.

In school, she was a member of the soccer team for four years including captain her senior year and on the cross country team her freshman year.

Amy is also an Academic Letter and Bar winner.

Jay Pietila is the son of Mike and Kathleen Pietila. He plans to attend Michigan Technological University and study mechanical engineering.

While at KHS, Jay was a member of the hockey team for three years, golf for two years, football his freshman year, and tennis team his senior year.

Within the community, he has been a volunteer at the Mountain View Ice Arena, and built a gun cabinet for the U.P. Whitetails Association

Jay has been selected for the Wendy's High School Heisman award, Lake Superior Hockey Conference, Lake Superior and Great Lakes Hockey Conference First Team, and Academic Letter

Keri Pietsch is the daughter of Tim and Carol Pietsch. She plans to attend St. Norbert College to become a psychologist.

At KHS she was a member of the volleyball team for two years and band for two years. Her honors include being in the top 10 percent of her class both her junior and senior years and an Academic Letter and Bar winner.

Keri's community activities include being involved in karate, as a Salvation Army bell ringer, Family Resource Center volunteer, and at Teck's Martial Arts.

Katie Roell is the daughter of Steve and Mary Jane Roell. She plans to attend Mount Mary College and study occupational therapy

At KHS, she was the class president for three years, FCCLA for three years, HOSA member her senior year, volleyball team for two years, tennis team her senior year, National Honor Society secretary, basketball team for four years including serving as captain, and track team for three years.

Katie's community activities including being involved in the Dickinson Ballet Company, Marquette Diocese Youth Encounter, St. Mary and St. Joseph Church altar server, and Dickinson County Hospital volunteer.

Her honors include being an Academic Letter and Bar winner, Student of the Week, FCCLA, National Gold Medal winner, and attending Girls State.

Celeste Santi is the daughter of Tony and Sally Santi. She plans to attend Michigan State University to major in social work.

Celeste has been very active in school including being a member of the Student Council for four years including serving as president; tennis team for three years; cross country team her freshman year; basketball team her freshman year; National Honor Society for two years; Drama Club for four years including serving as secretary; pep band for three years; and band for four years.

Within the community, Celeste has been a member of the Kids on the Block puppeteer troupe for three years, Sunday School Shepard for four years, and youth group for four years.

She has been honored as a recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution award, Student of the Week, All-State and All U.P. Cross Country, All U.P. No. 1 doubles team, nominated for Student of the Year, and an Academic Letter and Bar winner

Alyssa Smith is the daughter of Brett and Leora Smith. She plans to attend Michigan Technological University and pursue a degree in civil engineering.

While at KHS, she was a member of the volleyball team for four years and track team.

In the community, Alyssa has volunteered with middle school volleyball. She has been recognized as an AP Scholar with Honors and a recipient of Academic Excellence Award.
