IRON MOUNTAIN - The project of rebuilding the Pine Mountain steps is set to begin on Tuesday, Sept. 6, with Gunlach Champion of Iron Mountain heading the construction.
"Steps are selling well, including one of special interest to any Packer fan," said Jennifer Nettell, YMCA Center Director in Iron Mountain.
"All of the new steps will be numbered on the plaque, and today we sold step number four to Brett Favre," she announced.
While playing for the Green Bay Packers, New York Jets and the Minnesota Vikings, the future hall of fame quarterback wore the No. 4 jersey.
"Contacted by Steve Mariucci, Favre was thrilled to offer his support to a community he has visited several times, as well as having a chance to give back to all of his fans in this area," she said.
Steps will remain on sale through Sept 10.
Plaques will be placed upon completion of the project at the end of October.
"With the support of so many in the community, this project is able to get started on time with a completion date at the end of October," Nettell said.
Most plaques are $200 and are available at the YMCA. The $200 plaque allows for three lines of 15 characters.
"The best part of this project has been reading what everyone wants to say on their plaque," Nettell said. "Many have been funny, inspirational or very personal."
Steps will be closed during the time of reconstruction.
Kiwanis Ski Club will open the interior steps for use during the construction period.
