Community Thanksgiving at Dickinson Memorial

IRON MOUNTAIN - A traditional Thanksgiving Day meal will again be hosted by the staff of Dickinson County Healthcare System on Thursday, Nov. 24, organizers said.

The meal will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Oasis Cafeteria of Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.

"The Thanksgiving dinner is one of those times that traditionally brings families together. For many in our area, travel to family is not possible or they may no longer have family to join," noted Jan Gustafson, one of the event co-coordinators. "The purpose of this event is to provide the traditional Thanksgiving meal for those who would otherwise be alone for the holiday. Economic times being what they are, it has also grown to include families who cannot afford a holiday meal. We are inviting these families to join our hospital family for Thanksgiving dinner."

For those unable to drive to the hospital, volunteer drivers can bring them to the dinner or they can have their meal delivered to their home. Delivery begins at 10:30 a.m. Reservations are required, and must be made by calling 776-5320 before 3 p.m. on Tuesday, November 22, to reserve at seat or schedule delivery of a meal.

"This year we have found it necessary to limit delivery to no more than six meals per address," Gustafson said. "Delivery is an exercise in organization and timing so meals arrive hot. We ask for everyone's cooperation so we can continue our tradition of service to our community."

Organizers are also in need of volunteers to help out with all the different areas of hosting the dinner. Volunteers can be used in delivery of meals, serving the meal onsite and helping to clean up after the dinner.

The schedule for the day includes:

- Setting up the meal from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

- Preparing pies and Jell-O for serving from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

- Preparing meals for

delivery from 10:15 a.m. to 11 a.m. In past years, there have been more than 440 meals that have gone out for delivery, organizers said.

- Drivers ready to deliver meals at 10:30 a.m.

- Working as hosts/hostesses at the cafe from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

- Serving the meal at the cafe from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

- Dish washing from noon to 1 p.m. or 1:30 p.m.

- General clean up from 12:45 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Anyone interested in helping out can contact Gustafson and should specify the task they are interested and the time they will be there.

"We extend our deepest gratitude to all those who have selflessly shared their time to make this Thanksgiving dinner special to so many 'extended family members' throughout our community," Gustafson added. "It is heartwarming to see such participation."
