IRON MOUNTAIN - United Sportsmen Inc. located in Merriman off of M-95 has added some new programs for the winter months. Local gun enthusiasts can participate in shooting from December through September with some extended programs running through October.

Youth shooting is held on Tuesdays - starting in January and running through April - at 4 p.m.

On Wednesdays, archery league is held from December through March at 6 p.m. Archery practice is on Wednesday evenings at 4 p.m. Leagues will form and start in January to run for 12 weeks. All types of archery - target, hunting and traditional - are welcome. No crossbows are permitted because no targets are available for that type of bow.

Pistol League will start at 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays from January through September.

And, from December through April, five-stand shooting is open starting at 10 a.m. on Saturdays.

Summer activities will vary slightly with cowboy action, trap shooting, sporting clays and skeet shooting available to those interested.

The kitchen located in the clubhouse will be open after Jan. 1 for those who want to sample a burger or a sandwich and get a cold refreshment after shooting.

The club has grown and has improved over the last few years with many new activities and projects. One such project is the DRIP Program where the club planted food plots for deer. These are located on the property and are managed by the club.

The club participates in the Iron-Dickinson Sportsman Coalition meetings with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Topics include habitat management projects, hunting regulations, real estate, wildlife studies and research studies.

Besides featuring shooting and archery activities, the club holds Gun and Knife Shows regularly for those looking for a bargain. On Jan. 13 and Jan. 14, a Gun and Knife Show will be held at the club located on W7689 Sportsman's Club Road in Merriman from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Admission is $5, under 12 free with adult. Food, including breakfast, will be available on the premises. Table rental is $20. Set-up times for those selling are noon on Friday or 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Saturday. There is 24-hour on-site security. If interested in selling merchandize, contact John at
