Fishing picks up for the holidays

December 31, 2011
The Daily News

IRON MOUNTAIN - Panfishing picked up this week for area ice anglers.

"We've got nice ice," said Don Ciochetto at The Sport Shop in Iron River. "Guys have been doing petty well on panfish and northern. Walleye has been rather quiet."

John Grier's Whispering Pines Outpost in Breitung Township reported a busy week of fishing.

"Fishing has been tremendous," the shop reported. "Best week in months. Guys are catching a little bit of everything."

Patti Teske at Florence Sport and Bait reported some crappie action on the Brule and a few northern here and there.

"We've been selling a lot of wax worms, but I haven't heard any reports on bluegill yet," she said.

Dean Lindblom Country Bait and Tackle said walleye were biting on Cowboy Lake, while panfishing has picked up elsewhere.

"There's a lot of guys going out," he said. "Lot of panfish, perch, blue gill."

Hunters are reminded that Michigan spring turkey applications go on sale Sunday.

The Wisconsin and Michigan Departments of Natural Resources did not issue fishing reports this holiday week.
