Official: Concerns aired over Ann Arbor VA center

June 23, 2014

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — A federal investigator says a health care center for veterans in Ann Arbor has not dealt adequately with complaints about unsafe practices.

The VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System was among facilities mentioned in a letter to President Barack Obama from Carolyn Lerner of the U.S. Office of Special Counsel.

The letter released Monday says a whistleblower reported that employees were "practicing unsafe and unsanitary work practices" and untrained workers were improperly handling instruments.

It says the Veterans Affairs Department's medical inspection office found the allegations partly correct and made 12 recommendations. The whistleblower said it wasn't clear whether things had gotten better. The letter says the inspection office didn't discuss the whistleblower's ongoing concerns in a supplemental report.

The Ann Arbor facility did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
