IRON MOUNTAIN - It was another beautiful sunny morning when the Dickinson area Golden K met together May 21.
It was also a morning filled with "Music, Music, Music." Even though the GK singers sang "Put Another Nickel in the Nickelodeon," there was no need for a nickelodeon when the Kingsford High School Concert Chorale, 38 singers, charmed us with their beautiful songs.
Some of the songs were classical, jazz, sung in French, a very fast number selected by the students with percussion and guitar, and several solos, duets, and other groupings. Their final song to be sung at KHS graduation was a special rendition of "I Hope You Have the Time of Your Life."
Golden K members hope they have a great time too, along with a safe and blessed graduation.
Director of the KHS Choral is Crystal Hogan. Accompanying on the piano was David Carlson. It was a special day for Golden K, thanks to choral director Crystal and all these beautiful youth making us feel young again, recalling the days of yesteryear as we watched the youth sing in their elegant choral attire. Lovely Blue long satin dresses with long white gloves on the girls and the young men in dark suits, light blue shirts and blue satin ties. What a beautiful and handsome bunch. Paul Ward was program chairman and offered the prayer prior to coffee and sweet rolls.
During the business meeting, May Chairman, Richard Metzing reminded everyone that there was no GK meeting on May 28, Memorial Day.
He also reminded the group about the annual Picnic for Special Needs kids put on by the GK at the Iron Mountain City Park on Tuesday, May 29. GK helpers may want to come as early as 8:30 a.m. Paul Ward is chairman of the picnic. "Happy Birthday" to Paul who will be 80 on June 3.
"Happy Birthday" was sung for Donald Jacobs, Lois Chartier, and Richard Metzing who all have their 39th birthday this week. Happy 55th Anniversary to Ron and Joan Jouppi on May 25. The Jouppis also had a sister, Vivian Johnson, from Lansing as a guest. The GK Welcome song was sung for all the guests including Mr. and Mrs. Don Williamson.
Accepted and welcomed as new Golden K members are George Pera, Ben Determan, Mary Swope, and Mr. and Mrs. Don Williamson.
There are always happy people at Golden K with happy dollar thoughts read by Harlan Walters. Zyg Bonkowski, an active Golden K member who is over 95 years old, had this for Harlan to read: "They say people are living longer. Now they have to Who can afford to die?"
The Golden Throats will be singing at Victorian Pines on Wednesday, May 30, at 2 p.m.
The next regular meeting of Golden K will be Monday, June 4 at 10 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Kingsford. The program will be Kristin Sommerfeld who will talk about and show pictures of her recent Mission trip to Guatemala. Those who enjoy singing may want to come earlier for pre meeting sing a long with Alice Derwinski on the keyboard.
Congratulations to all the area high school and college graduates. Have a happy and safe graduation.
Thanks to all our veterans and our military people who help keep us free and safe. God Bless you all.
