EDITOR:Will Rogers once said, "When everybody has got money they cut taxes, and when they're broke they raise 'em. That's statesmanship of the highest order." Our county commissioners seem to have taken Mr. Rogers' quote to heart. What on earth were they thinking when they raised the fees on Sawyer Lake campgrounds? With the state of our economy and the fact gas prices are off the charts, camping seemed like the only vacation some people could afford. Not anymore; at least not in Dickinson County.
I would like to know the rationale behind such a drastic rate increase. As far as the public is concerned, there is zero evidence to justify a rate hike as significant as this. Our county commissioners are here to promote Dickinson County and help breathe new life into our sagging economy. This sure isn't the way to do it.
Maybe it's time, as a previous writer stated, to vote some new blood into our commission. We need commissioners who will strive to do what's best for all those who live, work and yes, vacation in Dickinson County.
Campers will continue to enjoy the natural beauty of the U.P., but I would bet they will be looking for reasonably priced campgrounds outside of our area.
These folks patronize many of our businesses during their vacation. Maybe those empty campsites will make you think twice about your decision. In the meantime remember the August primary and November elections are coming up.
