EDITOR:On Sunday morning, July 1, our Northern Lights YMCA will conduct its 2nd Annual Triathlon commencing at Lake Antoine Park at 7:30 a.m.
The swim will start in Lake Antoine near the beach house and will consist of a .3-mile and .9-mile swims for sprint and Olympic competitors, respectively.
The sprint bike route will take us around the lake and onto the Upper Pine Creek Road to U.S. 2 and then west past the Verso mill. At Quinnesec we will take Lake Antoine Road back to the park.
The Olympic bike route adds an out and back on Traders Mine Road and then continuing on to follow the exact same route as the sprinters. The Olympic bike distance is 25 miles and the sprint distance is 17 miles.
I respectively ask that traffic be aware of our event and provide ample clearance.
Some of the top bikers will exceed 35 to 40 mph on parts of the course and at those speeds it is hard to hear traffic approaching so give them plenty of clearance and slow down. The competitors finish off with a run around the lake.
Later in the morning, a youth version will be held and a part of this will also be on Lake Antoine Road, so again, use caution. Please feel free to attend this event.
The YMCA strongly encourages individuals and families to become involved in activities that promote healthy living. If you are interested in doing this event next year, now is the time to start training so don't delay.
We have already exceeded last year's participation and look forward to a growing and fun event. We have participants coming from all over the country including some Iron Man accomplished athletes.
In addition to the health benefits, the area will benefit economically because of our travelers and visitors.
We appreciate and value the support of city and county officials and staff. All have been very easy and helpful to work with. Last but not least, we appreciate our volunteers and sponsors, without which we could not hold this event.
