Autopsy confirms drowning caused minister's death

SIDNEY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — An autopsy has confirmed that drowning caused the death of a 53-year-old western Michigan minister whose body was found in his car submerged in a Montcalm County lake.

Authorities say sheriff's deputies found the Rev. Kurt A. Hoffman's body Sunday after someone spotted the vehicle in about 6 feet of water and 30 feet from the road.

Investigators say they think that he failed to negotiate a curve on a road, struck a fallen tree and veered into Lampman Lake at a high speed. The lake is in Sidney Township, about 35 miles northeast of Grand Rapids.

Hoffman was pastor at Trinity Church in Stanton.

The Grand Rapids Press and the Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant reported the cause of death Tuesday.
