EDITOR: On May 19, 1992, the citizens of Dickinson County went to the polls to cast their ballots for a very important proposal. Do we want to purchase the Fumee Lake property from the city of Norway? The results of the election were an overwhelming yes. Some 80 percent were in favor of buying the property from Norway.
The first item on the County Board of Commissioners' Agenda on July 1992 was to appoint a seven-member Fumee Lake Commission with staggering terms. The original members of the Fumee Lake Commission were: Jim Nicolas, Bill Marchetti, Quentin Peterson, Gene Carollo, Charlie Peterson, Debbie Jaspen and Lucy Shampo.
Since the purchase of the property from Norway, other adjoining parcels of land were acquired so currently we have about 1,800 acres with 12 miles of trails.
Many members of the Fumee Lake Commission have come and gone, but Lucy Shampo stays with us. She is the only one of the original seven still serving on the commission .
I want the people of this fine county to know Lucy Shampo has put in many many hours (no pay) over the past 20 years helping to provide a safe and free natural arena for silent sports.
So the next time you see Lucy express your appreciation for all the time she has contributed during the past 20 years.
Furthermore, say thanks to the current members of the Fumee Lake Commission, too, they are: Phyllis Carlson-chairperson, Lucy Shampo, Sue Pope, Christine Kionka, Nate Ruble, Casey McCormick and Terry O'Conner. There are many "behind the scenes" issues that confront the commission members as they make decisions on how to spend the alloted money wisely.
Keep up the good work.
