IRON MOUNTAIN - Two fatal accidents on U.S. 41, one in Negaunee Township and one in the town of Peshtigo, Wis., were reported on Friday.

The Negaunee Township crash occurred at 9:08 a.m. on U.S. 41 near M-35.

Deputies from the Marquette County Sheriff's Office said that a semi-truck was traveling east on U.S. 41 when it slowed to make a left turn. A motorcycle that was traveling behind the semi-truck was apparently unable to stop for the slowing truck, deputies added.

The operator of the motorcycle, a 46-year-old Negaunee Township man, struck the rear of the semi-truck and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The operator of the semi-truck was not injured.

Deputies said that the motorcycle operator was not wearing a helmet, and that alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident.

The town of Peshtigo crash occurred at 1:42 p.m. on U.S. 41 near Flame Road.

Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve reported that a northbound four-door sedan struck a northbound Chevrolet Blazer from behind. The Blazer was forced off the road and into the south ditch, where it rolled over.

Sauve said that a passenger in the Blazer, a 62-year-old Munising woman, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene from internal injuries.

Sauve added that the driver of the Blazer, a 54-year-old Munising man, was transported to Bay Area Medical Center in Marinette, Wis. then transferred to a Green Bay, Wis. hospital for treatment of injuries.

The driver of the sedan, a 31-year-old Peshtigo, Wis. man, and his two passengers were not injured.

Names are not being released at this time.

Sauve noted that this accident is the seventh traffic fatality in Marinette County this year.

Both accidents remain under investigation.
