IRON MOUNTAIN - A jury trial has been set for two Kingsford residents facing misdemeanor cruelty to animals charges.

Chief Assistant Prosecutor Carl Downing said Joan Khoury, 60, and Kathy Khoury, 56, both of Kingsford have been arraigned in Dickinson County District Court.

A jury trial has been scheduled for Friday, Oct. 5 at 9 a.m. in district court.

Both defendants are charged with four counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals after law enforcement removed 30 horse, 14 dogs and 15 cats from two separate residences in June.

The horses were tested and relocated to Pipers Rescue Ranch, a no-kill animal rescue in Wallace.

Homes were found for the dogs and cats through the Almost Home Animal Shelter in Quinnesec.

Each count carries up to one year in jail, a fine of up to $2,000 and up to 300 hours of community service.

The court may also order a psychiatric evaluation and costs of care, housing or veterinary care for the animals, and may order that the individual not own or possess an animal.
