Carmen Izzo

IRON MOUNTAIN - Carmen Anthony Izzo, 84, of Iron Mountain, passed away on Friday, Aug. 10, 2012, at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain.

He was born on Oct. 12, 1927, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Antonio and Filomena (Ferucci) Izzo. He attended the Iron Mountain Schools, graduating from Iron Mountain High School in 1945.

Carmen was a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain. He enlisted in the United States Navy during WWII on January 15, 1945, and helped with the reconstruction and rebuilding in Europe, until he was honorably discharged on Nov. 14, 1947.

Carmen married Marcella Legault on July 16, 1949, at the American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. He worked as a Millwright for the Niagara Paper Mill until retiring in 1990.

Carmen was an avid golfer, and loved playing baseball in his younger years. He also loved bowling, and was credited with starting the first bowling league in Niagara.

In his later years, he cherished the time he spent with family at the Izzo Camp just off the Wells Grade Road. He was preceded in death by a brother, Andri Izzo, and a sister, Rose Brisson.

Carmen is survived by his loving wife of more than 63 years, Marcella Izzo of Iron Mountain; his children Marsha (Ron) Hord of Felch, David (Lori) Izzo of Italy, Dennis (Sharon) Izzo of Kingsford, and Julie (Brian) Fortier of Iron Mountain; grandchildren, Chad (Amy) Hord, Sara (David) Fleming, Michael, Lauren and Austin Izzo, Kimberly (Eric) Freeman, and Paul (Andrea) Izzo; great grandchildren, Ashton and Aiden Hord, and Tyler Fleming; brothers, Carl (Dorothy) Izzo and Ralph (June) Izzo.

The visitation will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. The funeral service will follow at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Msgr. James Kaczmarek will officiate. Burial will be in Iron Mountain Cemetery Park.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.
