IRON RIVER - West Iron County, bolstered by the return of nine letterwinners including All-U.P. singles Kylee Erickson, starts the girls tennis season Wednesday.
"This year I am looking forward to a successful season with the experienced players returning," Wykons coach Denise Spelgatti said. "I am excited to have Kylee Erickson back for her senior year. She has been working hard this summer to prepare for the season and looks to have a successful year. She is focused and ready to go."
Erickson was joined on the All-U.P. team by honorable mention doubles Olivia Han-Mallory Tomasoski.
The other letterwinners back are juniors Hayley Anderson, Brittanie Barry and Lexi Kinner, and sophomores Tori Harris-Hoogenboom, Kristin Smith and Maddie Waara.
"The rest of the team is working hard in practice to improve and be ready for our first match," Spelgatti said.
All-U.P. singles Jaclyn Waara was a key graduation loss for last year's Wykons (8-4-2).
"Jaclyn was a real leader for the team and will be missed terribly," said Spelgatti, assisted by her husband, John, and Joe Serbentas.
"I am so grateful to Joe for helping out last year. He took over when John was hospitalized and again when our granddaughter was born. I appreciate his knowledge and enthusiasm."
Following the first match with Ironwood, the Wykons travel to Menominee on Thursday and Ishpeming on Friday.
