George Miatech

IRON RIVER - George A, Miatech, 82, of Iron River, passed away Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, at Northstar Health System in Iron River.

He was born on March 15, 1930, in Stambaugh, the son of the late Michael and Agnes (Smedlund) Miatech. He attended the Stambaugh Schools, graduating from Stambaugh High School in 1947. After high school, he moved to the Ann Arbor area, where he resided until entering the Marine Corp in 1952. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to the Ann Arbor area until moving back to the Iron River area in 1957.

George married the former Janice Fiorani on June 21, 1958, in Iron River, and the couple were life-long residents of the area. The couple celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary in 2003. Janice preceded him in death on Feb. 9, 2004.

He was employed by the M.A. Hanna Mining Co., working at the Homer-Waseca and Hiawatha mines until his transfer to the Groveland Mine, where he worked as a shift foreman. He was later employed by National Steel, retiring in 1985.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.

He is survived by his sons, Glen (Kathy) Miatech of Iron River and Terry Miatech of Menominee; daughter, Kathy Merchant of Oxford, Miss.; brothers, James (Carol) Miatech of Estero, Fla., Donald (Goldi) Miatech of Prairie Du Chien, Wis., and Kenneth (Clare) Miatech of Plymouth, Minn.; sisters, Nancy (Bernard) St. Germaine of Iron River and Agnes Guiliani of Caspian; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and special friend, Ramona Ross of Iron River.

He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Todd in December of 1962; brothers, Michael, Gerald, John, and Arthur; and sisters, Genevieve, Geniette and Alice.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River.

Funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron River with Rev. Gregory Veneklase to officiate.

Internment will be in the Resthaven Cemetery of Iron River.

The West Side Veterans will accord military rites at the graveside.
