IRON MOUNTAIN - Iron Mountain and Kingsford expect girls tennis success this summer.

Both teams started the season Wednesday with victories over Munising.

"We have high hopes for a successful season," said Iron Mountain Coach Greg Stegall, coming off a runner-up finish in the U.P. tournament. "Having five seniors graduate is never easy but we have some good freshmen talent and others stepping up to fill the loss."

Iron Mountain freshman Katie Brule captured her first girls tennis varsity match with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Munising’s Eve Gendron.

Iron Mountain's singles lineup in the season opener showed senior Laurie March along with freshmen Katie Brule, Olivia Truscott and Emily Chang.

"As the season progresses we'll make adjustments if necessary," Stegall said. "We're hoping for a winning season."

Kingsford returns nine of 12 players to the starting lineup including the 2011 U.P. Player of the Year in senior Sam Fleming.

"We're young but experienced," said Mark Shanks, in his third year leading the girls program. "We have high expectations to be a top contending team.

"Both the conference (Great Northern) and division (U.P. 1) will be balanced, with no runaways."

Chloe Nolingberg was the lone senior on last year's squad.

The Flivvers show nine letterwinners with Fleming, junior Hannah Tresedder, senior Michelle Scheibe and junior Santina Bianco starting at singles for the first match. Anna Shanks, Taylor Jacobson, Kate Lamy, Megan VanPembrook and Abby Johnson also lettered last season.

"There's been lots of juggling of players to spread out practice sites," said Shanks, who expressed thanks to his volunteer help.

With the Kingsford High School tennis courts under repair, the Flivvers have been practicing on the dilapidated Lodal Park courts and sharing Iron Mountain's Amos Marston Eastside Courts for matches.

Shanks hopes the high school courts will be ready before Labor Day.

"Some schedule changes are expected due to the court situation," Shanks said.
