CRYSTAL FALLS - George Mattson, 93, of Crystal Falls, passed away Monday, Aug, 13, 2012, at Northstar Health System hospital in Iron River.
He was born Oct. 16, 1918, in Canada, son of the late Samuel and Sofia (Liikala) Matson.
On Feb. 22, 1947, in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay), Ontario, Canada, he married Louise 'Lucy' Cimprich. She preceded him in death on Sept. 27, 2008.
George attended school in Canada and fought with the allied forces in World War II with the Canadian Army. In 1950, he and Lucy moved to Crystal Falls and George became an iron ore miner and worked for the Bristol and Sherwood mines. He enjoyed going to camp, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include, one son, Robert (Dawn) Mattson of Ettrick, Wis.; one daughter, Patricia (Gordon) Marcinak of Crystal Falls; three grandchildren, Tracy (Pete), Kari (Mike), and Eric; and five great-grandchildren, Jacob, Toni, John, Cassidy and Madeline.
Besides his parents and wife, George was preceded in death by one sister, Sylvia, and five brothers, Jalmar, Werner, Samuel, Dave, and Waino.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today at United Lutheran Church in Crystal Falls. Rev. Micheal Laakko officiated.
Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Crystal Falls.
