New coach, new direction for Flivvers

KINGSFORD Newly appointed Kingsford boys varsity soccer coach Alex Milinski inherits a younger squad light on varsity experience.

"It's going to be one of those years where we will be rebuilding," said Milinski, a Flivver alum who played with the program's first ever team in the mid 2000s and finished his collegiate career on St. Norbert's first team. "We just came off a strong team. We graduated something like 10 seniors."

With so many seniors on last year's team, the younger players did not see as much playing time.

"We have a lot of new guys," said Milinski, who has coach Northern Stars soccer for about five years as well as assisted with the Flivvers. "A lot of freshmen, sophomores and juniors who are going to be starters."

With the youth, Milinski's focus early on has been on possession and passing.

"We possess very well," he said. "We are running a new system this year, just because of the numbers we have and the size of the guys we have. We don't really have the bigger stronger guys that will hold and maintain the ball.

"We're going to try to pack the midfield and move forward from there. Our goal is to out pass teams, which we've worked heavily on, and once we do that, we'll start working in chances and finishing."

Senior Tyler Schaut gets the nod in goal for the Flivvers.

"He has been working really hard and been improving," Milinski said. "Once he figures out when to come when to stay all that good stuff, he should be pretty good for us."

While the preseason attention has been on possession, Milinski sees offensive potential in his group.

"Once we figure out the lanes that we can run into, and people start making intelligent runs, we

should be able to punish some teams," he said. "We have a strong team now. We just have to get up to game speed and figure out what soccer is all about at the varsity level."

After this weekend, Kingsford plays at Marinette Aug. 23, and opens at home against Peshtigo on Tuesday, Aug. 28.

Roster follows:

SENIORS - Alek Haag, Parker Spanton, Adam Turner, Justin Jones, Tyler Schaut, Tyler Metras, Brady McDonald.
