ISHPEMING - West Iron County, playing its third girls tennis match in three days, dispatched Ishpeming 7-1 Friday.
"That put our players to the test," WIC Coach Denise Spelgatti said of the schedule. "Add the high winds and I feel we played very well.
"Our singles players continue to play well and the doubles teams are getting used to playing together either as new partners or partners from last year."

West Iron (3-0) travels to Westwood on Monday, hosts Iron Mountain on Tuesday, visits Kingsford on Thursday and rounds out the week at Negaunee.
"Overall I am pleased with our progress," Spelgatti said. "Next week will be a big week."
Ishpeming was making its season debut.
"It was our first match after only a week of practice," Hematites coach Erl Langness said. "It being our first match and this being their third match, that makes a difference."
West Iron County, despite a shorthanded lineup, downed Menominee 5-3 Thursday.
"We were missing some players and had to forfeit four singles," Spelgatti said. "We played well at all flights."
Spelgatti said No. 3 singles Haley Anderson and No. 2 doubles Brittanie Barry-Sydney Mazurek "played hard till the last point."
Wykons claimed the top two singles, Kylee Erickson and Maddie Waara, along with three of four doubles points. Doubles points came from No. 1 Mallory Tomasoski-Olivia Han, No. 3 Meg Miatech-Kiki Piwarski and No. 4 Lexi Kinner-Kristin Smith

Olivia Truscott supplied Iron Mountain with a point at No. 3 singles.
WHS coach Chris Jackson was particularly pleased with two of his singles players.
"Caitlin Hewitt won a tough match at No. 2 singles in her best match I've ever seen her play," he said. "(No. 4) Katie Rankinen picked up her first varsity win along with some much-needed confidence."
