Edward Applin

IRON RIVER - Edward "Nipper" S. Applin, 97, of Iron River, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2012, at Northstar Health System in Iron River.

He was born Oct. 20, 1914, in Iron River, the son of the late Fred and Mary Ann (O'Connell) Applin. He attended the Iron River schools, graduating from Iron River High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.

Edward married the former Edith Garrett on June 15, 1946, in Iron River, and the couple made their home in Iron River. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2006, and Edith preceded him in death on Aug. 6, 2006.

He was employed by Haydon Oil Co. and later as an electrician by M.A. Hanna Mining Co., retiring from the Groveland Mine in 1976. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church of Iron River. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, and gardening, but his family was the most important thing in his life.

He is survived by one son, Richard (Jan) Applin of Fenton, Mich.; three daughters, Nancy (Robert) Bal of Whitefish Bay, Wis., Cheryl (Robert) Chilmonik of Cape Coral, Fla. and Lori (Glenn) Cagle of Iron Mountain; one brother, Claude (Anne) Applin of Helena, Mont.; one sister, Geraldine (Joseph) Schober of Iron River; sisters-in-law, Grace Applin of Rhinelander, Wis., Betty Applin of Iron Mountain, Lorraine Applin of McMillan, Mich. and Caroline Applin of Iron River; nine grandchildren, John and Laurie Applin, Julie White, Erik Bal, Jamie Mercer, Kathryn and Kimberly Chilmonik and Shawn and Chad Cagle; three great-grandchildren, Alia Applin and Morgan and Carson White; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by an infant son, John; nine brothers, Leroy, Tom, William, Bernard, Glenn, Manch, Ben, Roland, and Dale; and four sisters, Vera Paraventi, Evelyn Marcell, Maude Machalk, and Fern Marcell.

Visitation will be Friday from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron River.

Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church, with Rev. Gregory Veneklase to offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Pallbearers will be John Applin, Robert and Erik Bal, Robert Chilmonik, and Glenn, Chad and Shawn Cagle.

Interment will be in the Resthaven Cemetery in Iron River.

The West Side Veterans Council will accord military rites at the graveside.
