IRON MOUNTAIN - Iron Mountain business owner and Caspian resident Alan Arcand has been selected to attend the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.

Arcand is the Republican Party voting delegate for Michigan's District 1, which covers 33 counties - all of the U.P. and northern Lower Michigan (Congressman Dan Benishek's district).

A total of 2,286 delegates and 2,125 alternate delegates from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories will gather at the 40th Republican National Convention. The four-day convention opens Monday.

Arcand said the most important vote during the convention will be nominating the Republican candidates for president and vice president.

A voting delegate must be registered as a Republican, have Republican beliefs and core values, and attend monthly meetings as well as a county convention once a year.

County delegates are selected to attend the state convention and the districts then elect national delegates.

"District 1 elected me to go to the National Convention," Arcand said.

Arcand, who owns Arcand's Service Center in Iron Mountain and is a co-partner to a new business, Northwoods Protection Service in Iron Mountain, is also a precinct delegate in Iron County for State Sen. Tom Casperson, R-Escanaba.

An Air Force veteran, Arcand is a former instructor for the government, having taught jet mechanics. He was an F-15 jet mechanic while in active duty.

He got involved in politics was after serving in the U.S. Airforce/Uniform Code of Military Justice and said he wanted to see change.

"The best way to create change is to get involved," he said.

Delegates travel to the convention at their own expense. While there, delegates have a seat on the convention floor and are expected to attend and participate in the various convention sessions.

Some delegates will be chosen to represent their delegations on one of the four standing convention committees (Resolutions, sometimes referred to as the "Platform Committee"; Credentials; Rules; and Permanent Organization).

In addition to the official convention proceedings, many state Republican parties organize activities, such as meetings and briefings, for their delegation members.

Arcand holds an aeronautics degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, among other degrees and certifications.

He was an election inspector in the Aug. 7 primary.

He lives in Caspian with his wife, Nancy, and three sons.
