NORWAY - Local individuals, organizations, churches, and businesses have donated approximately 200 backpacks filled with school supplies to area children through the "Blessing of the Backpacks" event.

Any items remaining when the school year starts on Sept. 4 will be divided between Iron Mountain, Breitung Township, Norway, and Niagara schools.

Sleeter, a member of First Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain, said that this is the second year that volunteers have collected backpacks for children. Last year, they received 20 backpacks. This year, they received ten times that amount.
"We set up collection boxes at businesses and got the Michigan State Police involved with information on bullying," Sleeter added. "It's wonderful how everyone came together."
Organizations and businesses involved include: the Michigan State Police, Golden K Club, Norway Speedway, Verso, Forward Financial Credit Union, Twisted Sisters Boutique, Select Appraisal Services, Barry D. Johnson, M.D., Focus on Function, Town and Country Appraisal, Family Wellness Center, Walmart, Bethany Lutheran Church in Norway, Calvary Lutheran Church in Quinnesec, First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain, Trinity United Methodist Church in Iron Mountain, and Grace United Methodist Church in Norway.
