ATLANTA, Ga. - Dale Harold LaLonde, 75, of Atlanta, died in his home on Aug. 21, 2012, as a result of complications from multiple myeloma after a heroic 11 year battle with this cancer disease.

Dale was born in his parents' home on Oct. 10,1936, to Ellen Solberg and Lawrence Nelson LaLonde ("LN") in Foster City, a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where he developed a love of nature and hard work. He was the youngest of seven children. He attended the Felch Township school system kindergarten through the 12th grade, where he excelled in baseball and especially basketball.

During his senior year in high school, Dale met his sweetheart, Elaine, and wife of 53 years. Dale graduated in accounting from his beloved Michigan State University in 1958, and began working as a cost accountant for General Motors and for 10 years served in the U.S. Army reserves.

It was in l960, that he began his 32 year long, successful career with Kawneer Corp. and companies related to it. Ultimately, Dale served as president of Kawneer, Howmet, Apex Corp., and executive vice-president of Alumax, Inc. Dale absolutely loved the challenge and excitement of his corporate career which included world travel. He retired in 1997.

It was in 1966 that Dale and Elaine moved to Atlanta and joined Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and subsequently joined the Emmaus Community, a small house church community that enriched and supported Dale thru his illness.

As years passed and more time was available to him, he served on the board of St. Vincent de Paul, developed hobbies in photography, genealogy, wine collection and gardening. Many of these hobbies would come together when Dale and Elaine entertained with panache in their lovely back yard.

Dale's love of work could only be rivaled by his deep love of family.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine; their daughter, Michelle LaLonde; son-in-law, Brian Feldman and their three children, Rachel, Benjamin and Hannah all of Atlanta and their son, Michael and daughter-in-law, Chi Mene LaLonde and their children, Troy, Gavin and Quinn LaLonde, all of Bend, Ore.

In the last 11 years, Dale was treated by some of the most intelligent, intuitive, caring and dedicated physicians, nurses, physician assistants, medical techs and everyone involved with the multiple myeloma program, bone marrow transplant area and infusion center of the Winship Cancer Institute and Emory University Hospital. He felt particularly lucky and blessed to be under the care of Dr. Sagar Lonial. Elaine, Michelle and Michael would like to publicly thank all of them.

There will be a private family "Celebration of Life" in the near future.
