IM earns league win at Negaunee

NEGAUNEE - Iron Mountain outlasted Negaunee 3-2 in a Mid-Peninsula Conference volleyball opening match here Thursday, rallying from a 2-1 deficit for a 24-26, 25-13, 13-25, 25-17, 15-8 win.

"We had a slow start but as the sets went on, we gained momentum," senior middle hitter Maria Pirkola, who registered 14 kills.

Abby Gerhard led the Mountaineers with 19 digs and Sarah Girard added 18.

"The front row (Girard, Gianna Hill and Pirkola) really stepped it up with 12 blocks," Mountaineer coach Jeanne Newberry said. "Setter Kate Johnson moved the ball around the floor with 25 assists. Kari Sanford played a strong back row."

Mountaineers, fueled by a Gerhard scoring run, also defeated North Dickinson 25-19, 28-26. Newberry also cited the back row play of Mandy Haferkorn, Kristen Gendron, Alena Herman and defensive specialist Susie Hagan.

"Sophomore Marti Pirkola played strong at the net," Newberry said.

Iron Mountain junior varsity bowed to Negaunee 25-21 and 25-19.

North Dickinson rallied from a 1-0 hole to win 18-25, 25-23, 15-12 over Negaunee.

The Nordics received 100-percent serving efforts from Chelsey Stroud and Gina Rotter in the loss to Iron Mountain, while Miranda Jacobson was 15-of-16 serving with 12 points and five aces.

In the win over Negaunee Stroud and Lexi Steele were perfect serving, and Rotter went 13-for-15 with 10 points and four aces.

"Overall, the girls took a step in the right direction tonight," Nordics coach Sandy Haustein said. "Our coverage was a lot better. For a young team playing against two bigger schools, I thought they did a good job and I'm very proud of them."

Iron Mountain heads to Norway Tuesday, while North Dickinson plays at Kingsford Thursday.

HARRIS - Forest Park, with a "strong and consistent" performance, downed Bark River-Harris 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-11) in Skyline Conference volleyball Thursday. Trojans' Lexi Gussert registered 20 kills.

"Lexi had a great night at the net," Forest Park Coach Kim Bjork said. "All of the girls played well. We moved well on coverage and stayed focused the entire match. The girls that came off the bench played hard."

Forest Park won the jayvee match 2-1. Trojans (9-3-2 overall, Skyline 2-0) host Mid Peninsula on Tuesday.

NORWAY - Melanie Kurth's 12 kills led Norway in a 25-10, 25-11, 25-19 Mid-Peninsula volleyball win over Westwood Thursday evening.

"We played a well tonight and worked hard," Knights coach Nicole Anderson said. " The girls are gelling as a team and therefore our teamwork and communication is getting better."

Knights servers combined for 22 aces, Bailey Grayvold's eight pacing the team. Knights jayvees won 25-12, 8-25, 25-11. Norway hosts Iron Mountain Tuesday.

NIAGARA, Wis. - Niagara suffered its first M&O Conference volleyball loss, bowing to league favorite Peshtigo 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-18) on Thursday.

"Peshtigo has a very, very good setter and they're strong up front," Niagara Coach Carol St. Arnauld said. "They have a real nice ball club and I can't take anything away from them."

Badgers have played 32 games in the past two weeks including a 35-34 set with Florence on Tuesday. Badgers (2-1 M&O) travel to Gillett on Tuesday.
