Kingsford rips Lakeland

LAKELAND, Wis. - Kingsford jayvee football opened its season with a 40-0 non-conference win over Lakeland.

Brody Sundquist paced the Flivvers ground game with 214 yards in nine carries. Sundquist scored twice on runs of 59 and 68 yards.

Tyler Roberts added 127 yards on 13 tries with touchdowns of 33 and 19 yards.

Joe Hofer completed two passes for 12 yards and scored on an 11-yard scamper.

Joe Gregory added another score on a two-yard blast for a Flivver offense, which totaled 437 yards on the ground.

Marcus Andrews, Roberts, Luke Wahoviak and Ethan Metras led the team in tackles. Kingsford collected six turnovers with Wahoviak getting an interception and a fumble. Trevor Schaut and Sundquist added picks, while Andrews and Metras pounced on fumbles.

Coach Mark Novara's squad hosts Menominee on Saturday morning.

IM jayvees

GWINN - David Mielcarek and Cole Rossato each rushed for a pair of touchdowns as Iron Mountain thumped Gwinn 50-0 in junior varsity football.

Mielcarek covered three and 25 yards while Rossato went 17 and six yards for scores.

Coach Bucky Johnson's Mountaineers added scoring runs from Jacob Cousineau, 19 yards, and Izzy Barrazza, 56. Another touchdown came on Levi Verrette grabbing a 14-yard pass from quarterback Brock Grenier.

Grenier, Rossato and Mason Schinderle tallied 2-point conversions. Grenier also kicked two extra points.

Jake Weslin and Brock Grenier intercepted passes and Robert Norton recovered a fumble.

Iron Mountain (1-1) visits West Iron County on Thursday.

IM freshmen

IRON MOUNTAIN - Iron Mountain's freshmen football team is off to a 2-0 start.

Brady Erickson ran nine and eight yards for scores in a 23-22 decision over Escanaba. Ryan Michaud grabbed an 11-yard pass from Tanner Huotari for the other Mountaineer touchdown.

Ryan Michaud kicked three extra-points.

Jake Lefebvre, Nick Lusardi and Erickson led the defense with three solo tackles and nine assists. Houtari recovered a fumble.

"Luke Truscott and Jacob Stoner played stellar in the secondary," Coach Donny Bianco said.

Huotari threw 14 yards to Michaud for one score and rambled 40 yards for another as the Mountaineer freshmen upended the Northern Elite Predators junior varsity 35-8.

Erickson added two TD runs from nine and one yards, and Lefebvre powered 40 yards to the endzone.

Michaud converted on five PAT kicks.

"Strong defensive effort by the whole team," Bianco said.

Kingsford freshmen

KINGSFORD - Kingsford's freshmen scored 22 points in the second quarter and defeated Norway's junior varsity 29-14 at Flivver Field.

Coach Kevin Murdock's Flivvers, with a rushing attack accounting for 288 yards on 60 attempts, tallied three touchdowns on the ground - Brandon Kowalkowski, three yards; Ben Moreau, 27, and Wyatt Caylor, three.

Kowalkowski also tossed a 43-yard touchdown pass to Moreau. Kowalkowski completed five of nine passes for 166 yards.

Chris Roell kicked three extra-points and passed to Cole Moreau for a two-point conversion.

Caylor and Kyle Henes led the Flivvers with eight tackles each. Kowalkowski intercepted a pass and Nick Smith had a fumble recovery.

Norway trailed 29-0 at halftime.

Escanaba and Kingsford will meet in freshmen football on Thursday, Sept. 6.
