Norway's Barbara Marchetti-DeSchepper, a world-class speedskater in the 1950s, entered the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame in 1976.

More than 35 years later, she was recently inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame. Why the lengthy wait for the deserving Marchetti-DeSchepper?

"There was a large number of athletes decades ago that for whatever reason were never inducted," said Jim Stark, Michigan State Hall of Fame executive director, explaining to the Detroit News how committees went to work finding the deserving candidates. "This is the result of their hard work. It's doing the right thing and inducting a lot of people that have been due their honors.

"It's a great class."

Marchetti-DeSchepper was among 24 inductees in the 56th MSHOF class. Some of the others tabbed were Pronovost, 82, the former Detroit Red Wings great, one of 24 inductees honored Thursday at The Gem Theatre as part of the 56th class of the state sports hall of fame. Some of the others tabbed were Marcel Pronovost, hockey;

Ralph Simpson, Dan Roundfield and Chet Walker, basketball; Ted Simmons and Milt Pappas, baseball, and George Allen, football.
