Good news

September 11, 2012
The Daily News

EDITOR:

It seems lately that we are inundated daily with bad news - violence, droughts, storms, bad politics, gas and food prices skyrocketing, cancer, the list goes on and on.

Well, we would like to share some good news that is happening right here in our community. Many of you have heard about the Dickinson County Cancer Unit Loan Closet but for those of you who haven't, let us fill you in. We are a non-profit organization formed about 12 years ago to assist cancer clients with financial assistance in our service area. We loan out medical equipment at no charge to both cancer and non-cancer clients. Our service are includes all of Dickinson County and those living in the cities of Florence, Aurora, Niagara and Spread Eagle.

Since we have been serving our area in the past 12 years, we have helped over 2,000 people.

In just the past 12 months, we have given out over $42,000 in financial assistance to our cancer clients. Where does this money come from, you ask?

That is the biggest part of the good news. All of these monies were graciously donated by our caring community - individuals and businesses of our area. More good news, out of every dollar donated, about 98 cents goes right back to serving our clients as our operating costs are very low thanks to generous businesses and a group of dedicated volunteers.

Some national organizations have very high operating costs so the return to their clients is much lower. As you can see, this is a good place to put your dollars, helping local people with a good return for your donated dollar.

Our client load continues to grow but with the continued support of our citizens and businesses, we will be able to meet the urgent need in our community. We are very excited about the Half Marathon organized by the First National Bank & Trust of Iron Mountain that is scheduled for Sept. 15 with all proceeds donated to us.

We are a unique organization offering a wonderful service and it should be noted that we are not affiliated with the American Cancer Society or the National Cancer Institute.

You can find us at 1401 1/2 S. Carpenter Avenue behind Dr. Garrett's office, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Our phone number is 776-0966. We have a fine group of caring, dedicated people who staff our office and they truly exemplify our motto which is "Good People Helping Good People."
