Kulas with another first

The Daily News

HANCOCK - Daniel Kulas, a student at Iron Mountain High School, chalked up another win for the co-op Flivvers co-op cross country team here Thursday.

Kulas turned in a dominant finish at 17:01 to top the boys field, but Houghton, with three runners in the top 10, came away with the team victory.

"The boys varsity team did an outstanding job running against very good Houghton and Calumet teams," Flivvers coach Dan Carey said. "I think the boys are really understanding that every place counts, that actually helped us be a close second to Calumet.

"Daniel ran a very smart race today and looked very comfortable while he cruised to the top finish."

Nate Carey added a fifth for Kingsford, with a 18:26. Other finishers for the Flivvers were Keaton Parent (14th, 19:24); Keith Holmes (17th, 19:37); Dylan Lawton (19th, 19:41); Josh Johnson (20th, 19:47) and Jorge Sanchez (38th, 21:39).

On the girls side, Meredith Campbell paced Kingsford in 20th.

"The girls' training is progressing and they are beginning to gain more confidence in themselves everyday," Carey said. "Almost all of the girls ran their seasonal best times for the year."

A timing error prevented Campbell from getting an official time. Also finishing for Kingsford were Hannah Malone, Molly Malone, Maddy Shorkey, Heidi Stenvig and Danielle McConnell.

Kingsford runs next at the Menominee-Marinette Border Battle at North Shore Golf Course Tuesday.
