New No. 1 in ‘Big 5’ grid poll

MARQUETTE - Forest Park remains the "Little Five" leader in the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association high school football poll.

Coach Bill Santilli's Trojans (4-0 record) collected two first-place ballots and 22 poll points to edge St. Ignace (4-0) with two first-place votes and 21 poll points. North Dickinson (4-0) is third among Class D schools with one and 17.

Menominee (4-0) has taken over the "Big Five" rankings from Kingsford (3-1). The Maroons garnered four first-place ballots and 24 poll points to best Ishpeming (4-0), one and 20, and the Flivvers, zero and 14.

Kingsford faces Menominee on Friday at Flivver Field to open Great Northern Conference play.

Poll follows (first-place votes in parentheses):

BIG FIVE (Class A-B-C)

1. Menominee (4) 4-0 record, 24 poll points; 2. Ishpeming (1) 4-0, 20; 3. Kingsford 3-1, 14; 4. Negaunee 4-0, 12; 5. Escanaba 2-2, 4.

OTHER: Marquette (3-1) 1.

LITTLE FIVE (Class D)

1. Forest Park (2) 4-0, 22; 2. St. Ignace (2) 4-0, 21; 3. North Dickinson (1) 4-0, 17; 4. L'Anse 4-0, 9; 5. Pickford 4-0, 5.

OTHER: Gogebic (3-1) 1.
