"We've actually picked it up a lot at practice," Florence coach Trudy Rochon said. "We're working a lot harder and it's going to start paying off."

Florence found plenty of power up and down the lineup Thursday, with Emma Baumgart and Morgan Walker each contributing five kills.

"We attacked early on in the season and then kind of got away from that a little bit," Rochon said. "So now we're trying to bring that back. We want to be attacking all the time, working more on hitting that ball, hitting it hard and finding spots."

The Lady Cats were never really threatened by Phelps aside from the start of the third set. Phelps hung with Florence early in that one, briefly taking a 10-9 lead before Keaghan Doda dropped in one of her team-best seven aces to help put Florence back in control.

A kill by Walker made it 12-10, and Joerns followed with consecutive slams from the outside. Doda then reeled off three more aces in a row and the Lady Cats never looked backed.

Florence heads to Oshkosh for a tournament this weekend, where they will try to work out of a four-team pool.

"My goal there is to go down and play as hard as we can play, dig things up, hit the floor and work on coverage," Rochon said. "There is going to be bigger teams and bigger girls there, so we just want to try to get better as the day goes on."

"That's what you want to do at these tournaments, use them as a means to get better."

Florence jayvees rallied for a 22-25, 25-23, 25-16 victory over Kingsford's junior varsity squad.

Varsity summary follows:
