IRON RIVER - Kingsford remained unbeaten Monday with a 7-1 girls tennis decision over West Iron County at Nelson Field Courts.
Kylee Erickson posted WIC's lone point with a No. 1 singles win against Kingsford's Sam Fleming.
"Kylee and Sam played an entertaining match," West Iron County coach Denise Spelgatti said. "They are such good players."
"We were really concerned about the wind," Flivver coach Mark Shanks said. "But I told the girls this was the best place to play (with the great windbreak of hills and trees.
"But the wind settled down and it turned out to be a nice day."
The Wykons hadn't played or practiced in a week.
"We played better than I anticipated," Spelgatti said. "The scores don't show how close some of the matches were. The wind was a factor today for everyone, but the girls played through it."
Kingsford (13-0-1) hosts West Iron County, Escanaba, Marquette, Gladstone and Menominee for the Great Northern Conference tennis tournament Wednesday.
"Kingsford, as always, has a very strong team," Spelgatti said. "Our team continues to improve and never give up. We are looking forward to Wednesday's conference tournament and hopefully good weather."
