IRON MOUNTAIN - Iron Mountain completed its first lap through the Mid-Peninsula Conference Tuesday night, sweeping Westwood 25-19, 25-10, 25-13.
Iron Mountain’s Katelynn Johnson (5) flips the ball over the net while teammate Kari Sanford (9) and official Hans Wienke look on during Tuesday’s Mid-Peninsula Conference volleyball match with Westwood.
The first-place Mountaineers (5-1 MPC), welcome Negaunee on Thursday as round two ensues.
"Now that we're going into the second round (of the league schedule), we know its only going to get harder for us," IM coach Jeanne Newberry said.
Westwood provided little challenge for the Mountaineers, but it did give Newberry a chance to work on some different rotations.
"It was helpful," she noted. "Mandy Haferkorn, Kristen Gendron and Susie Hagan, they haven't been able to get in a sequence in the back row, and I'm thrilled I got all of them serving tonight."
Mountaineers excelled at the serving stripe, recording 18 aces in the match. Abby Gerhard and Maria Pirkola each put down five.
Iron Mountain never trailed in any set, opening multiple-point cushions early on in each one.
Sarah Girard's 10 kills led the way for Iron Mountain. Gerhard (14) and Katelynn Johnson (9) led the dig chart.
