Mountaineer volleyball

Smooth sailing past Negaunee

IRON MOUNTAIN - If Mid-Peninsula volleyball teams had a choice right now, they'd probably just assume skipping Iron Mountain on the schedule.

Negaunee could do little to match the Mountaineers rapid attack here Thursday, as Iron Mountain cruised to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-17) victory.

The Mountaineers, since dropping the first set in a 3-1 win at Manistique on Sept. 20, have now won nine straight sets over conference opponents.

Iron Mountain’s Kari Sanford (9) and Maria Pirkola (10) stage a double-block on Negaunee’s Rosalie Anderson (14). Mountaineers’ Kate Johnson looks on.

"We tried to play fast tonight, and they proved to me they could do it," Mountaineers coach Jeanne Newberry said. "We started playing that two-ball, and that two-ball is so important because it's quick."
