KINGSFORD - Kingsford wrapped up its tennis regular season unbeaten by knocking off West Iron County 7-1 here Monday afternoon.
"It's kind of neat going unbeaten during our first season on our new courts," Flivvers coach Mark Shanks said, his team improving to 14-0-1.
Sam Fleming turned the tables on Kylee Erickson, the Great Northern Conference No. 1 singles champion, with a 6-2, 6-3 decision.
"It just goes to show what home court advantage can do," Shanks noted.
The Wykons' lone victory came at No. 2 singles, where Maddie Waara knocked off Hannah Tresedder, last week's GNC No. 2 singles champion.
Kingsford competes at the Division 1 U.P. tennis tournament Wednesday at Marquette. West Iron County plays at Westwood in the Division 2 tournament.
Division 1 participants are Escanaba, Gladstone, Marquette, Menominee and Negaunee, while Division 2 consists of Gwinn, Iron Mountain, Ironwood, Ishpeming, Westwood and Munising.
"It'll be interesting by bringing in Negaunee, the Mid-Pen champ, and taking out West Iron," said Shanks, noting differences from last week's Great Northern Tournament which the Flivvers won. "Hopefully the other teams kind of beat up on each other and take away points."
